Laser development

What is light
The question of what light is dates back to time immemorial. But it was not until the quantum theory was developed that the different colours (spectra) in light were explained for the first time combining wave and particle characteristics. And without this fundamental knowledge of light’s properties lasers would be inconceivable.
In laser development, we at CTR focus on small, rugged and powerful lasers. Given their high energy efficiency and long service life of the pump diodes, the lasers are ideal for industrial use.

Powerful miniature lasers
Having developed the first laser in the world that can replace the spark plug in size and power, we at CTR have acquired special expertise in the area of small diode-pumped solid-state lasers. In the challenging environment of a combustion engine, we have produced a laser concept that can meet all the requirements, such as small package, high temperature and vibration resistance, and the necessary pulse power.
Laser ignition also holds potential for optimising industrial gas motors, as it reduces the maintenance required and enables downtime to be cut.
Another alternative is for such lasers to effectively ignite lean fuel-air mixtures in turbines.
The lasers developed at CTR are also suitable for fine marking work, such as glass engraving and microprocessing (drilling, milling and vaporising). Another application is LIBS technology (laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy). Here lasers enable reliable material analysis (e.g. stone, concrete, metal) using portable devices.
At the development stage, we use special laser design tools. Our development capacity at CTR thus includes optical simulation of the resonator, cooling & heat flow calculation, design in well-equipped optical laboratories, prototype characterising and support up to production readiness.
