Spectral Imaging

Spectral imaging: analysing in colour
This new technology for characterising the surface of objects combines the advantages of spectroscopy with those of digital imaging. Spectral imaging (SI) makes the chemical, chromatic and geometric properties of an object visible, thus enabling its exact classification at the same time.

Three-dimensional images
Unlike conventional imaging where a camera determines a grey or colour value (e.g. RGB) for each pixel, SI systems make all the spectral information in a certain wavelength available for every pixel. The allows images to be acquired containing valuable information on the molecular or atomic composition and structure of the observed materials. An image acquired by an SI system corresponds to a three-dimensional matrix with two spatial and one spectral dimension, information that would be unobtainable with other technologies. Spectral imaging opens up a wide range of applications for scientists and engineers in medicine, agriculture, the processing industry, recycling, chemistry and forensic medicine.
Theory and practice are combined at CTR to enhance innovation. What may appear unrealistic and impossible thus becomes possible. Spectral imaging is just one example.

Our competence
  • Non-contact analysis of foodstuffs (quality, degree of ripeness, pests or mould)
  • Quality control in agricultural products (e.g. seeds, grains, plants)
  • Selection of solids according to visual and chemical criteria
  • Detection of spatially resolved concentrations (e.g. in pharmaceuticals)
  • Automatic material classification (e.g. sorting plastics)
  • Expertise in sensor & systems engineering
  • Development of user-friendly software
  • Know-how in the field of efficient algorithms
Application examples
  • Online material classification and sorting
    - Paper, plastic sorting, waste recycling
    - Incoming inspection of agricultural products for degree of ripeness, blemishes, pests, mould etc.
    - Selection of foodstuffs according to visual and chemical criteria
  • Precision colorimetry (quality control for textiles and filaments)
  • High-resolution concentration measurements without sampling
    - Checking of powders/mixtures for composition, mixing ratio, contamination, colouring etc.
    - Moisture tests on solids (foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, chemicals etc.)
  • Medicine (detection of anomalies etc.)
Your benefit
  • Higher precision process and quality control
  • Time saved by analysing processes in real time
  • Productivity increased with continuous product control and closed loop process control
  • Faster return on investment
