About us:

CTR Carinthian Tech Research AG is an industry-oriented research and development center for smart sensors and system integration. As the largest non-university research center in southern Austria, CTR has gained a reputation for expertise in R&D sensor technologies serving science and industry at both a national and international level. CTR focuses on four main research areas:  Microsystem Technologies, Packaging & Hetero-integration, Photonic Sensor Systems and Smart Systems. In the Austrian COMET program, CTR features with "ASSIC Austrian Smart Systems Integration Research Center" as a K1 center of excellence.

Short description:

In order to pave the way to new generation of nano-microsensors and actuators (Surface Acoustic Wave devices, micromagnetic sensors, microenergy harvesters, …) CTR is studying the potential of piezoelectric materials applied to vibrating MEMS (MicroElectroMechanicalSystems)  and especially scanning micromirrors (see figure 1).

Figure 1. Model of a 1-axis PZT micromirror with a mirror diameter of 1 mm.

Micromirrors can be used in many fields including light detection and ranging (LIDAR) systems for the automotive industry (ex: autonomous cars)  or biology for endoscopic bioimaging. Compared to well-established electrostatic and magnetic micromirrors, piezoelectric micromirrors can offer better electric power efficiency and better miniaturization abilities.

In this context, we would like especially to optimize a PZT based micromirror for high resolution displays and develop a pico projector prototype.

Challenges still remain before a potential technology transfer to industrial partners.

First, the master student will implement a fully parametrized new model on COMSOL Multiphysics ®. Based on this model, the student will determine the best set of parameters to increase efficiency of the micromirror. The optimization can be led, for example, through: tailoring the resonant frequency of the micromirror, improving the layout of the piezoelectric transduction, a better understanding of damping mechanisms (especially air damping) and a study of stresses in the torsion bar.

Then, the student will also study the possibility to implement a second vibrating mode in the same or a modified structure to get, in the end, a 2-axis micromirror.

Finally, the student will be able to apply his ideas in the newly established ISO 8 and ISO 5 clean rooms by developing microfabrication processes and especially deposition processes of piezoelectric thin films.
